This is my third oil painting. Over a period of one year I learned many of the techniques I still use today. It was inspired by Caravaggio's 1602 painting entitled "The taking of Christ". It's probably the biggest reason I paint mostly in the 'tenebrist' style. There are many things that I would do differently today, but this painting remains a continous source for study. The best reference for me to travel backwards in my technical progression. More often than not it reminds me that more paint-brushing does not always produce the best results. And at 4 x 6 feet it fits nicely behind the couch.
