Although I have created many reference sketches on location, nothing quite compares to a group of detailed reference photos for rendering authentic images in oil paint. Despite having painted more than 80 equine oils to date I believe that I am just starting my career as an artist. In a continuing quest for the worldwide best I am always looking for fantastic equine images to use as references for paintings, yet at this time I do not have access to photograph some of the magnificent horses of the world. In an effort to build on my portfolio and rise above this limitation, I will gladly accept reference photos with great oil painting potential.

(Not to exclude other ideas - Any subject matter that cries out to be painted will be considered.)

If your photos are chosen for a painting, (not all photos can be chosen), I will send you a small, special edition, signed, paper print of the painting and offer you the opportunity to own the original at a very reasonable discount.

WHAT MAKES FANTASTIC REFERENCE PHOTOS?

1.) DETAIL - Photos clear enough to see an animal's eyelashes. (large .jpg file) CLOSE-UP. At least one very personal, in close, (of course, no flash) photo. Usually that is for eye detail and reflection.

2.) LIGHTING - Sunlight across the animal's face, creating as many light and shadows as possible. This gives a painting depth, and usually reveals character. The painting below "Winter" is a good example of light and shadow.

3.) BLING - I love painting metal and leather. Sunlight hitting buckles, chains and bits. Old leather. These are icing on the cake for me. If your photos do not have this I am far less likely to use them. The carriage horse example below is the most extreme so far, and gives you some idea why I love painting bling.
