INFORMATION ABOUT GICLEE PRINTS

	What are giclee prints? Giclee, pronounced (ghee-CLAY), from the French verb "to spray" or "to squirt", describes the highest standard in printmaking technology.   Giclee history Giclee prints began as Iris prints, ( pioneered in the late 1970's by Iris Graphics). Iris technology was first developed as a proofing process for digital pre-press applications. The quality of the process was noticed in the mid 1980's by pioneers of giclée printing like Graham Nash (of Cosby, Stills and Nash) and inkjet pioneer Jon Cone.
	Technology today Crystal clear images are generated from high resolution digital scans and printed with professional ink jet printers, using archival quality inks, onto various substrates including canvas and fine art paper. From hundreds of inkjets, more than a million droplets of ink per second are sprayed onto a canvas or watercolor paper spinning on a drum. A completed image is comprised of almost 20 billion droplets of ink. The resulting print has no perceptible dot pattern, an endless array of richly saturated color, and every nuance of the original image.
	Light-Fast inks Special inks have been developed for giclee printers that provide better color accuracy, expanded color gamut and a longer life of the print. Giclee inks resist fading 10 times longer than those previously used in Iris printing. The most archival, water -based, light-fast inks available in the world are used to guarantee light-fastness and UV-resistance. Why a giclee print? Quite simply, the giclee printing process provides the closest duplication of an original artwork that is humanly, mechanically or techinically possible. The giclee print now rivals many traditional silver-halide and gelatin printing processes and is commonly found in museums, art galleries, and photographic galleries.   Available prints have been divided into size categories.
